Salishan Sturgeon Nose Canoe Stewardship October 9 | 11-2pm

Shawn Brigman, Ph.D. is a Spokane Tribal Member and a descendant of the Sn̓ʕ̓ay̓ckstx (Sinixt), qlispé (Kalispel), and Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc (Kamloops Indian Band), all three of which are historically documented as employing bark sturgeon-nose canoes. Since 2012, he has sculpted several ancestral bark sturgeon-nose canoes, two historical canvas sturgeon-nose canoes, and thirty contemporary SALISHAN STURGEON NOSE CANOES-a novel design he established in 2013.

Indigenous students and employees are being welcomed to join Dr. Shawn Brigman as he offers guidance and demonstrations in the caretaking and use of our canoe, Kpiƛ̓l̓s, at the Oxbow. Shawn will also speak to his journey with traditional plant materials and the making of traditional and contemporary canoes, as well as connections to water protection and salmon restoration.

Lunch, drinks, and tastings of traditional foods will be provided. This event is sponsored by I-SPARC and prioritizes Indigenous students and employees.
