April 22, 2026, 3-5 pm Meeting: Granite/ G-wing parking lot at the trailhead Event Description: Join Sustainable Selkirk on Earth Day, April 22, 2026, as we give our beloved Castlegar Campus trails and shoreline a spring cleaning! The Castlegar Campus trails and shoreline hug the sacred confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers. The confluence is an important habitat for many species of wildlife, particularly waterfowl and fish. It is also a popular recreational area for trail walking and fishing. Old fishing line, lures, and hooks can be found dispersed along the shoreline, practically invisible, but presenting a threat to wildlife. Starring in the G-wing parking lot, we will work out way along the trails to the river, and then up the river toward the confluence. From there, we will wave to our friends across the confluence in K'pit'els who will be organizing a volunteer community cleanup in that area! We hope you will join us on this beautiful early-spring afternoon to steward our beautiful landbase! Safety hazards: wildlife, slips, trips, falls, exposure to harsh weather, overhead hazards, exposure to hazardous or sharp litter, insects and bees (bring an EpiPen if you have allergies). Risk mitigation: Participants must take part in a safety tailgate meeting, sign the release of liability waiver below, and follow these safety measures: • Do not pick up sharp or hazardous objects with bare hands. Use work gloves or an extended reach aid. Sharps must be disposed of in a separate bucket from other trash. • Stick to the group and not wander off alone. • Refrain from scaling extremely steep slopes to retrieve litter. • One or more volunteers will be tasked with identifying potential hazards during the event, i.e., keeping an eye out for wildlife. • A first aid kit will be on site. All participants should be aware of who is carrying it at any given time. • Bring personal protective equipment (PPE) including closed toed shoes, sun hat, work gloves, and dress for the weather (layers). • Bring water, snacks, and any medications they may require in the case of a medical emergency. • If moving through the brush, participants are advised to make loud noises to deter wildlife.
