Elders on Campus Request Form (Internal)

The following questions are based on our experience working with Elders in a respectful way and help guide the request and identify expectations. We ask to please use this form rather than reaching out individually to Elders. Please contact the Elders Coordinator, Ann Marie Smith directly if you have any questions.

When requests are made collaboratively through Indigenous Services we work to ensure that the Selkirk College community as a whole receives the maximum benefits of their generosity of spirit and time. The data from your request supports our annual reporting to the province.

An Elder’s handbook is available on my.selkirk as a resource to support staff as they work with Elders on campus.

We require 6 - 8 weeks notice and longer for more complex requests. Although we try to support all requests, due to increasing requests and limited capacity we may not be able to fulfill all requests made.

Honourarium

Elders on Campus are on salary and provide up to 5 hours weekly on campus during the academic year to provide student support and lead cultural learning such as drum circle, storytelling, and fire teachings.

Our team will complete the honorarium expense form on your behalf as seeking clarification for renumeration is a sensitive topic for Elders who may not respond if asked. We endeavour to have the honoraria cheque ready for the day of the event rather than mailed to the Elder.

Finance requires 10-15 days advance notice to process (delays can occur during year end reconciliation).

If your school or department has a limited budget, please indicate the amount you are able to provide. We will work with you to explore supplemental funding to support the experience.

Typically, Elders are paid $50-75/hr up to $500/day.
